Scotland’s leading organic whisky distillery lands its spirit stateside

With an uncompromising focus on flavour and sustainability, Nc’nean Distillery has announced a partnership with ImpEx Beverages to bring Scotland’s leading certified organic Single Malt to America for the first time.

The first of the distillery’s whisky to be made available via ImpEx, who will act as its exclusive US importer, is the light and fruity Nc’nean Organic Single Malt Whisky which recently won Gold at the prestigious US Spirits Rating and a Double Gold at San Francisco Spirits Competition.

As well as being crowned Craft Producer of the Year 2023 at the Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards, the pioneering whisky distillery was recently awarded a prestigious B Corp certification in recognition of its dedication to sustainability.

Founded by Annabel Thomas, Nc’nean began distilling in March 2017, putting innovation and sustainability at the forefront of its ethos. It is the only fully organic working whisky distillery in Scotland and is powered by 100% renewable energy, resulting in verified net zero status for carbon emissions from its own operations (scopes 1 and 2)¹. Its bottles are made from 100% recycled glass – a first in the Scotch Whisky industry – which saves 40% of the carbon produced compared with using virgin glass.

ImpEx Beverages imports premium and rare spirits from around the world, with a special emphasis on the best of what Scotland has to offer making it the ideal partner to kickstart Nc’nean in the US market which is the number one global export market in the world by value for Scotch. A recent study revealed that nearly 78% of millennial consumers prioritise the purchase of products that are organic, natural, and environmentally conscious².

Welcoming the partnership Annabel Thomas, founder and CEO of Nc’nean, said: “I am really excited to see Nc’nean launching in the US – to be able to share our story of sustainability and innovation with the US consumer is both a privilege and a landmark moment for us in the development of the company. As a central part of making that happen, I’m delighted to have partnered with ImpEx as our national importer, who have a fantastic track record of telling the stories of boutique whisky brands in the US market.”

Sam Filmus, president of ImpEx, added: “We at ImpEx take tremendous pride in partnering with the thoughtful team behind Nc’nean to bring this wonderful spirit to the United States. Annabel and her colleagues have done a remarkable job producing this whisky with sustainability and global footprint in mind, meeting and exceeding all requirements in order for this whisky to be deemed officially organic. Nc’nean has just now hit US soil and is making its way through our distribution network, but there are already so many connoisseurs anxiously awaiting its arrival. I know they won’t be disappointed!”

Nc’nean’s core whisky is made from organic Scottish barley whose natural yields and rich soils contribute depth of flavour while the gentle fermentation and distillation accentuates the delicate, fruity flavours in the spirit. The liquid is then matured in specially treated red wine and American whiskey barrels, alongside a small amount of sherry casks, to develop its signature body and sweetness. The result is an exceptionally smooth and elegant whisky with notes of citrus, peach, apricot and spice, which pairs perfectly with soda water in a highball.

Nc’nean Organic Single Malt Whisky will be available in specialty retailers across the United States from October.
